Climate Science born in Hamburg: Anomaly coupling in climate modelling
Prof. Dr. Robert Sausen
When you couple atmosphere and ocean models, both tuned to the observed quasi-equilibrium, the coupled model usually exhibits a drift towards a new quasi-equilibrium. This might impact the climate response of the climate systems to external perturbations such as anthropogenic forcings. In order to overcome this problem, the flux correction method has been implemented in many coupled atmosphere-ocean models or earth system models for several decades. Actually, flux correction is an anomaly coupling. Under this name the method still is applied in many cases and assures a greater reliability of the climate sumulations.
