The science of Klaus Hasselmann

Klaus Hasselmann is a prominent climate scientist in Hamburg, who was until 1999 director of the Max-Planck Institute of Meteorology, an institution he founded in 1975. That Hamburg is one of the few global centers of climate science is to a large extent the personal achievement of this man, who turned last year 90. His (and Suki Manabe’s) achievements were recognized with the Physics Nobel prize in 2021 with the citation "for the physical modelling of Earth's climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming."

However, Klaus Hasselmann range of achievements is considerably broader, which some of his coworkers documented in the forthcoming book “From Decoding Turbulence to Unveiling the Fingerprint of Climate Change: The Science of Klaus Hasselmann” (Springer-Verlag, open access in mid 2022), including wave modelling and remote sensing; coupling climate and economic systems and even particle theory. This range will be reviewed in the seminar’s presentation.
