Sándor Mahó about the Generation of MRG Waves
9 April 2025
Not only in water, but also in the atmosphere, there are various types of waves. The range spans from short sound waves to planetary waves that extend around the entire Earth. The latter includes the “mixed Rossby-gravity waves” (MRG waves). These occur in tropical latitudes and have a wavelength of several thousand kilometers. These waves not only influence the weather in the tropics, but their effects reach all the way to us. Sándor from our research group "Atmospheric Dynamics and Predictability" explains in this video how he studied the generation of these waves in his PhD by conducting experiments with the computer model TIGAR.
