About the Institute
Founded just a decade after the university itself, meteorology at the University of Hamburg will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2029. Its early history is intertwined with the development of the German Maritime Observatory (Deutsche Seewarte), at which renowned scientists like Wladimir Köppen worked, and closely tied to Hamburg’s legacy as a Hanseatic city of exploration and trade.
From our early years, when meteorology lectures were delivered by renowned Alfred Wegener of the Deutsche Seewarte, to recent decades marked by close collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology established by Nobel laureate Klaus Hasselmann, we have consistently combined meteorology education programs with innovative research of weather and climate processes.
Our six professors and their working groups cover a wide spectrum of research topics, providing students with numerous hands-on opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research throughout their studies. Our MSc program in Atmospheric Science, re-launched in 2023, welcomes international and domestic students and, together with our long-standing undergraduate meteorology program, prepares students for diverse career paths with a strong foundation in meteorology. This includes many career options related to the great transformation to sustainability, such as renewably energy and climate change management.
Whether you are a prospective student, a researcher seeking collaboration opportunities, or a visitor eager to learn more about weather and climate, we hope you find our research and teaching pages informative, and you can always reach out with any questions you may have.
