Data Assimilation and Predictability
Data assimilation and predictability research focuses on the tropics, from the background-error variance modelling in variational data assimilation and the multivariate initialization of equatorial waves to the role of the tropics in global predictability. The tropics are a region where the relative roles of the mass-field and wind-field observations are particularly critical as demonstrated in studies associated with the impact of the Aeolus satellite. Recent research also includes modelling the forecast error growth across scales and the information content of observations in data assimilation using ensemble Kalman filter methods.
