Curriculum and modules
Curriculum
Our program offers you profound and comprehensive training in core topics of Atmospheric Science. In the first year (semester 1 and 2) you can learn the essentials of Atmospheric Science in mandatory core courses. The broad range of elective courses allows for individual specialization – from weather to climate science, from urban climate applications to global circulation.
At the same time, many students work as student assistants and thereby gain insight into the numerous research areas of the KlimaCampus Hamburg. These contacts often lead to new research ideas for Master’s theses to be pursued in the second year (semester 3 and 4). The theses are usually integrated into current research projects and are divided into the initial phase in semester 3 and the implementation phase in semester 4.
Modules
The mandatory courses familiarize you with modelling techniques focusing on boundary layer, modern atmospheric observational technologies, a global view on atmospheric dynamics, and an understanding of the climate system from a radiation perspective.
There is much more to Atmospheric Science beyond these essentials. As advanced core elective you can choose from a wide variety of courses and specialize according to your own individual interests. Our institute follows the University’s principle of the “Unity of Research and Teaching” and therefore enables seamless transitions from teaching to research.
There is no limit for free elective courses. Enjoy the full academic breadth of Universität Hamburg. You are allowed to attend courses from all study programs like computer science, economics, or social science.
Your own research project is at the center of your studies when it comes to the Master’s thesis in the second year (semester 3 and 4). You will join a research group to develop your topic as part of the preparatory Atmospheric Study project and then discover new science while writing your thesis.
