The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has just announced that our colleague Vera Melinda Galfi, who is currently a post-doctoral researcher in our Theoretical Meteorology group working on the project TRR181 "Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean", has been awarded the 2019 Donald L. Turcotte Award for the best PhD dissertation in the area of nonlinear geophysics: https://eos.org/agu-news/2019-agu-section-awardees-and-named-lecturers
Melinda did her BSc and MSc studies in Meteorology at Universität Hamburg and then obtained her PhD in Geosciences on the topic "Mathematics of extreme events in atmospheric models" in 2018 as IMPRS student, also at Uni Hamburg, supervised by Prof. Valerio Lucarini. Melinda’s work has provided new fundamental contributions on the use of extreme value theory for studying the dynamics of geophysical flows and of large deviation theory for providing a new viewpoint on persistent and spatially coherent extreme events.
The Turcotte Award is given annually to one honoree in recognition of outstanding dissertation research that contributes directly to nonlinear geophysics. Our warmest congratulations to Melinda!
