The University of Hamburg got four of the much sought-after “Excellence Clusters”, large projects funded by the federal government to promote cutting-edge research and to create outstanding conditions for young scholars at universities. The Meteorological Institute plays a leading role in the cluster “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society”, with participation in almost all projects in the area “Sensitivity and Variability in the Climate System”. All MI professors serve as project chairs in the cluster, in projects “Clouds and Tropical Circulation” (Buehler), “Canopies in the Earth System” (Ament, Leitl), “African and Asian Monsoon Margins” (Claussen), und “Sustainable Adaptation Scenarios for Urban Areas – Water from Four Sides” (Schlünzen).
