Tools and Data

These are some tools and data we use with METRAS-PCL. You may also use these tools but please be aware that they come with the usual safeguards: They are provided 'as is' without any warranty or implied fitness for purpose.

We welcome your feedback at metras"AT"uni-hamburg.de or @memiuhh in case you encounter any issues.

Note:

  • You can extract files with the extension .tgz  after download with the command
    tar xvfz <filename>.tgz
  • Most programs will display a usage page if started without any options.

m2cdf

m2cdf can be used to convert METRAS-PCL files to netCDF format. It is currently in testing status. We recommend this program to explore model data, but please do not use the current version for final data analysis. Please note that not all variables may be converted.

Supported file types for use with METRAS-PCL:

  • grid files (GA)
  • 3d model output (BP)
  • 3d model restart data (BR)
  • 1d model inital data (B1)
  • land use and terrain height data for gritop-l (PK)

Basic usage to convert <file> to <file>.nc

m2cdf <file>

or

m2cdf -i <file> -o <file>.nc

For advanced usage invoke m2cdf without any command line options.

Example case

This is the set-up for the example case shown in the model documentation. If you keep the files in the same directory as the program you can start your first METRAS-PCL run without changes.

VDI 3783-7 (E3)

These are the grid files for test case E3 of the VDI guideline 3783-7. The file contains the two grid files GAvdiE3a and GAvdiE3b.

gatopomod

gatopomod is a tool to modify grid files created from gritop-l.

It allows to

  • filter orography near the boundary (as required by VDI 3783-16)
  • filter orography across the domain
  • fill terrain heights below zero
  • shift the model domain by a given height
