Extremes

Extreme weather and climate events, like storms, droughts and heat waves, have often dramatic impacts on nature and society. Our group is interested in the return periods of such extreme events as well as the expected maximum levels within a period. The statistical properties of extremes can be described with methods which are independent of the particular application as they come from universal mathematical properties. Therefore, the methods developed and applied by our group can be used in other research areas as well, for example in hydrology, seismology, and economics.
