Serial Clustering of Extra-Tropical Cyclones
Alexia Karwat
I will present a review article entitled “Serial clustering of extratropical cyclones: a review of where, when and why it occurs“ by Dacre and Pinto (2020). Serial clustering of extra-tropical cyclones occurs when a large number of mid-latitude storms pass over a specific location in a short period of time. Since cyclone clustering can produce large amounts of heavy precipitation and wind damage, it can lead to major societal and economic impacts. The main idea of Dacre and Pinto's review is to provide an overview of current research of serial cyclone clustering at various spatial and temporal dimensions. I will explain the many kinds and metrics that define serial cyclone clustering. Furthermore, the climatology and timescales of serial cyclone clustering in the present and future are presented. In addition, I will elucidate the dynamics of serial clustering and illustrate the links between clustering and teleconnection patterns. Finally, future research directions and unanswered questions are discussed.
