Investigation of Mesoscale and Microscale Atmospheric Phenomena

OVERVIEW ON ACTIVITIES

Investigation of atmospheric phenomena and pollution transport in the microscale and mesoscale are the main focus of the research activities. For this purpose atmospheric models of different complexity are developed and applied, including complex 3-dimensional flow, chemistry and transport models. Within some models, chemistry moduls (gas phase and aerosol chemistry) are simultanously solved using wind, temperature and humidity fields at the same timestep and considering influences of flow fields on pollution transport and of aerosols on cloud formation. Simplified versions of the developed models are made available for consultance work.

Several studies performed concentrate on pollution transport and the processes influencing deposition (dry and wet). Comparisons with measurements are made, measurements are analyzed and the representativeness of measurement sites is studied by use of models. Another focus of the work are the parameterisations applied in the models. In example, parameterisations of turbulence and of close-to-surface-processes are continously checked and improved to increase the reliability of the models and to improve their performance. To evaluate mesoscale and microscale models test frames have been developed that can be applied to high-resolution atmospheric mesoscale models and to obstacle resolving microscale models. Many model applications contribute to North Sea atmospheric research (atmospheric inputs, fate of nutrients)

The research group has close national and international cooperations with other meteorological institutes as well as with scientists from other research areas (e.g. chemistry, oceanography, biology).

Further details on the applied models can be found when pushing the 'Applied Models' button, work details can be found under 'Projects' and 'Thesis', referred as well as other papers can be found under 'publications'. Group members are shortly introduced below.
