The research program of the Meteorological Institute is introduced. Individual research topics are grouped according to the internal structure of the institute, although most of the subjects require cooperation between the research groups or with external partners.

Ever since 2007 the KlimaCampus has functioned as a platform for climate research in Hamburg. It links together 18 university research institutes as well as the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and the German High Performance Computing Centre for Climate and Earth System Research.
