Project overview
The aim of the project IRO-2 is to prototype a system for sea ice forecasting and ship routing for safe and economic shipping in the Arctic. System components include remote sensing, an arctic wide ice/ocean data assimilation system, a regional atmosphere - sea ice - ocean - model and a ship routing module. For the last project year, a system test is planned with a ship cruise in the Barents Sea.
Project contribution
Our contribution to the project is the development of the regional model system HAMMER based on the atmospheric model METRAS, the sea ice model MESIM and the ocean model HAMSOM. Initial and boundary conditions are taken from global weather forecasts, results of the arctic wide model NAOSIM/ICEDAS and remote sensing data.
The main work is conducted on the system development and operationalization of the research models by technical improvements and scientific evaluation of processes and time scales.
