Exchange programme with China
In 2007, the MI signed an agreement with the College of Atmospheric Sciences of the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in China. Its conditions are similar to the agreements with the U.S. and Australia. Because of the language barrier, it is probably exceptional to take courses at the respective partner university, but there is the opportunity to write one of the theses, or do an internship abroad. In these cases, all communication may
take place in English. Further information is available here.
Since the winter term 2008/09 there is an Erasmus agreement with the University in Tromsø. As the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is a outpost of Universität in Tromsø, this enables students from Hamburg to get an Erasmus stipend for their studies at the world's northernmost university. There are no tuition fees at UNIS.
Typically a stay there is used to take elective courses or the minor subject in polar meteorology and polar oceanography. There should not be any problems concerning language, as all lectures are held in English.
Internships in Australia
The MI arranges abroad internships for its students. In summer 2004 two students completed an internship at the Bureau of Meteorology of Australia, its national weather service.
