Applied Models

Investigation of Mesoscale and Microscale Atmospheric Phenomena

For investigating pollution transport, chemical reactions and atmospheric phenomena in the mesoscale and the micro-scale several 3-dimensional numerical models were developed. The 3-dimensional nonhydrostatic mesoscale model METRAS calculates meteorological quantities and concentration fields simultaneously. Chemical reactions are calculated with the model MECTM. Both Models may be nested into results of larger-scale models or in itself and interactively coupled to a sea-ice model. The 3-dimensional chemistry transport model MECTM employs METRAS results and is used for pollution transport studies. A simplified version of METRAS has been adopted to the PC and is now available to the public on request ( METRAS PC ).

The micro-scale obstacle resolving nonhydrostatic transport model MITRAS is used to investigate flow and transport regimes within the urban boundary layer. It can be coupled to the obstacle resolving chemistry model MICTM and directly employs results of the microscale meteorology model MITRAS. .

The mesoscale and microscale models are coupled to the model system M-SYS which can be used for, e.g.simulation of concentration in different resolution.
