The Portable University Model of the Atmosphere (PUMA) is a simplified GCM designed to be as compatible as possible with the comprehensive GCM ECHAM. It is simplified in such a way that the particular point of interest, namely the dynamical aspects of eddy mean flow interaction, can be analyzed systematically. The PUMA code represents the dynamical core of ECHAM whereas the diabatic heating and friction consist of relaxation processes and are forced by Newtonian cooling and Rayleigh friction (see equations 3 and 8).
This Appendix describes one of the numerical experiments performed with PUMA. First, the experimental design is given, followed by a presentation of the basic diagnostics of the climatology. The climatological fields presented here can be compared with simulations of the comprehensive GCM ECHAM (Roeckner et al. 1992 and 1996).
